The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)

My rating: 4/10

The premise, while not terribly original, could've been fun (heck, I'm pretty sure it has been in like, half a dozen similar Halloween movies), but the dad character's constant obnoxious shtick just sucked all the joy out of this. Lauren Lapkus looked very cute in that little orange pumpkin outfit, though.

 It's the Year of the Rat man. I hope it's a happy one for you and yours. I had the pleasure of spending time with the newest member of the Jee Gang toting baby Ashton around while he took in the happy chaos at our Chinese New Year gathering yesterday. His wonder at the world makes it a happier place.

 Conan Serpent War #4 - Jim Zub (writer) Ig Guara & Vanesa R. Del Rey (art) Frank D'Armata & Jean-Francois Beaulieu (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This bizarre adventure teaming up Conan, Solomon Kane, Agnes and Moon Knight concludes with the demon Wyrm chopped up into fish food. This story won't matter to anyone other than fans of those four heroes but it sure was fun to read.

 Batman #87 - James Tynion IV (writer) Guillem March (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I'm happy Catwoman and Cheshire are in this story. I love how Guillem March draws women. There are a lot of players in Gotham City right now so please pay attention as the mystery unfolds.

 Once & Future #6 - Kieron Gillen (writer) Dan Mora (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) Ed Dukeshire (letters). That's two fantasy stories that ends with the death of a serpent. Must be a common theme this week. One of the bad guys gets away and the story of Duncan and his Granny will continue. I don't know if I'll read the next arc since this one didn't conclude very well. I felt that Zombie King Arthur was defeated too easily.

 Detective Comics #1019 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Scott Godlewski (art) David Baron (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). And so the winter solstice passes and the mystery of the Nordic cult ends. I'm glad this story about a creature from the nether regions was short.

 Atlantis Attacks #1 - Greg Pak (writer) Ario Anindito (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). I picked this off the rack to read because I wanted to see what Namor was up to these days. He's back being the angry ruler of Atlantis pissed off at the air breathers. This time he's mad at all of the Agents of Atlas. That Jimmy Woo sure hangs out with the weirdest heroes of the Marvel U. If you're a fan of all those Agents you'll want to add this 5-issue mini to your subscriptions.

 Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #2 - James Tynion IV (writer) Steve Epting & Javier Fernandez (art) Nick Filardi (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). Cool. It looks like Lex Luthor is going to be the one to save the world this time. I like who he's asking for help. I'll give you a hint: har.

 The Amazing Spider-Man #38 - Nick Spencer (writer) Iban Coello (art) Brian Reber (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Here's the latest twist to the life of Peter Parker: J. Jonah Jameson is helping Spider-Man now instead of vilifying the hero. Jonah is also working for a new media firm and the old fogey does not like what he sees. We're back to the Chameleon storyline where Peter and his spy sister Theresa are trying to get back all the S.H.I.E.L.D. tech that was stolen. All the dangling plot threads are starting to get annoying.

 Superman #19 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ivan Reis (pencils) Joe Prado, Danny Miki, Julio Ferreira & Oclair Albert (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) AndWorld Design (letters). I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop after Superman's big secret identity reveal. All of his Earthly super villains haven't taken advantage of the news so let's head out into space shall we? This is where Mongul attacks the new United Planets. The Superman versus Mongul fights have been epic and this new one won't disappoint.

 Fantastic Four #18 - Dan Slott (writer) Paco Medina, Francesco Manna & Carlos Magno (art) Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Now I get the point of this "Point of Origin" story. When Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben launched all those years ago, the Overseer of the planet Spyre saw a threat to his perfect planet and shot cosmic rays at the ship to kill the FF. We know how that went off the rails. So now we have the Fantastic Four returning to Spyre and basically screwing up the whole planet like the Overseer foresaw. Hey, you don't mess with Destiny. I wonder why Reed is so pissed off in the next issue teaser.

 Batman Superman #6 - Joshua Williamson (writer) David Marquez (art) Alejandro Sanchez (colours) John J. Hill (letters). Well that was a whole lot of yakkity-yak. This issue takes place before Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #1. Batman and Superman find Wonder Woman to tell her the bad news that Donna Troy has been infected by the Batman Who Laughs. Then they continue to try and find a cure for the infected. The issue ends with a surprise appearance of two super villains making the next issue a "must read" for me.

 Marauders #6 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Matteo Lolli & Mario Del Pennino (art) Erick Arciniega & Federico Blee (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Kitty (call her Kate) saves the day but is sunk in the end. I've been ambivalent about reading this title of political intrigue and this issue made up my mind to bench this book. The subject matter is mature but the dialogue is juvenile so I'm outta here.

 Kill Lock #2 - Livio Ramondelli (story & art) Tom B. Long (letters). The search for the key to disable the Kill Lock continues. I care about the plight of these four condemned droids.

 The Old Guard: Force Multiplied #2 - Greg Rucka (writer) Leandro Fernandez (art) Daniela Miwa (colours) Jodi Wynne (letters). The team goes to rescue victims of human traffickers and get a surprise when they open the container. This book will blow you away.

 Guardians of the Galaxy #1 - Al Ewing (writer) Juann Cabal (art) Federico Blee (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Call him Racoon, Rocket Racoon. Rocket's gone from looking like road kill in the last story arc to quite the fashion plate in this new run. And his guns have gotten a lot smaller. The team is recovering from the Universal Church of Truth massacre but their respite is short lived. Zeus and his Greek gods have returned and they're all evil now. You can tell because they're dressed in black. Nova asks the Guardians for help but only Starlord, Rocket, Moondragon and Phyla-Vell/Captain Marvel join the fray. I like that Marvel Boy is back and when the mission goes FUBAR, a surprise ally makes an appearance. The art alone makes this worth picking up off the rack.

 Basketful of Heads #4 - Joe Hill (writer) Leomacs (art) Dave Stewart (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). Poor June, she keeps meeting up with bad men. You can't blame a girl for defending herself. Now there are two heads in the basket. Basket head number three just introduced himself. This is just too weirdly fun.

 Ruins of Ravencroft: Dracula #1 - Frank Tieri (writer) Angel Unzueta (modern day art) Stefano Landini (flashback art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This is the last of the one-shots leading into the 5-issue Ravencroft mini. It's going to have lots of Marvel heroes and villains if this issue is any indication. In the first few pages alone we have Man Wolf, Misty Knight, Mr. Fantastic, the Falcon, Power Man and Iron fist and the Winter Soldier who introduces the flashback where Captain America fights with Dracula. When we return to the present, new inmates are being incarcerated into the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminal Insane. I could only identify Mr. Hyde but I didn't recognise the others. The consultant hired to work with these inmates was a surprise and may entice you to pick up Ravencroft #1 when it hits the racks on January 29. Imagine if the Joker were hired to work at Arkham Asylum.

 Wonder Woman #750 - I read all 9 stories in this $9.99 US anniversary issue to see where Princess Diana was at right now. Nothing much has changed since I stopped reading her book regularly so I won't be picking up #751. I've read other comic books aimed at young female readers, the Unstoppable Wasp is a good example, but this one doesn't spark a renewed interest in me to follow Wonder Woman's adventures.

 Birds of Prey 100-Page Giant #1 - Now this is more like it. There are 3 new stories and 3 reprints that I've not read before so it's a great value at $4.99 US. The core team of Batgirl, Black Canary and Huntress are joined by Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman, all fabulous females ready for action. Almost makes me want to see the Birds of Prey movie that hits theatres Friday, February 7.

Hong Kong National Security Law

On June 30th at 2300h GMT +8 it became illegal for any person in the world to criticize China or advocate for Hong Kong self-determination. In an unprecedented act of legislation, Chief Executive Carrie Lam extended the scope of the Hong Kong national security law to the entire world. While China also extends its Criminal Code to the world, there is an exception that the law being violated must also exist in the territory where the offense is committed.[1]The new Honk Kong law makes no exception, instead seeking to end foreign support of the democratization of Hong Kong. Article 20 of L.N. 136 of 2020 pertains to acts of secession, defining the organization, planning, or participation in separating Hong Kong from China, whether or not by force or threat of force, as a criminal offense subject to life imprisonment.[2] Pursuant to Article 38, the scope of this law will extend to persons outside the region who are not permanent residents.[3] The penalties for infractions range from 10 years to life imprisonment for serious offenders, three to five years for active participants, and a maximum of three years for other participants.[4]

Previous organizations, Blizzard and NBA,were caught between appeasing China and upholding freedom of speech when members of their organizations showed support for HK.[5]These companies gave two drastically different responses, which resulted in unique consequences. On October 8th, 2019 Blizzard immediately withdrew prize money and gave a one year ban for the player, Blitzchung a Hong Kong resident, when he said in Chinese, during a post-game interview, “Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our age.” The reasoning from Blizzard is because he violated the Grandmasters’ rules forbidding “Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image…”[6]. Blizzard then banned three American University students the same day who held up a sign saying “Free Honk Kong Boycott Blizz” [sic]. The AU students received a six month suspension from playing Blizzard games because they had violated the rules. Those who supported the game quickly canceled subscriptions and boycotted Blizzard.[7]On the other hand, general manager for the Houston Rockets, Daryl Morey, posted an image on Twitter that supported the protestors in Hong Kong, even after quickly deleting it, the NBA pre-season shows were banned in China.[8]

Before the Hong Kong national security law passed, there was an understanding between companies that operated in China or Hong Kong that any dissent against China would lose the company access to Chinese markets. The issue now is how does China plan to implement this law in the US? Will our social media services, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok, begin to censor Hong Kong activism at the risk of falling under the secession, subversion, or terrorism act? For the moment, it seems China is interested in pursuing individuals who criticize China. Bogac Ozdemir, a global head of credit based in Singapore at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd., was offered to resign after saying COVID originated in China and not to believe the numbers they are saying in a LinkedIn post on his personal profile.[9]

A number of countries have stepped up to oppose China’s security crackdown, including France, Germany and Australia. Australia, Canada, US, and UK are suspending extradition with Hong Kong.[10] The new law may lose its teeth for global enforcement but those traveling to China and with business interests should still be wary of potential ramifications. These countermeasures come at a time when international relations are already fraught from COVID, with a number of countries publicly blaming China for the pandemic.[11] China’s top military hawk, Dai Xu, recently gave a speech claiming that China is being unfairly targeted and attacked by the US while the world watches.[12] His speech criticizes the unipolarity of the US and capitalism, saying “the US puts profits before ideology and value” and “never say ‘we are number one’, ‘we are better’ before the US. Even if the thought crosses your mind, take it as a sign to step down and be more modest. [sic]”[i] It’s clear that as propaganda ramps up between countries policies will follow, such as President Trump’s executive order to end Hong Kong’s special status.[13] Ending the special status subjects Hong Kong to the escalating trade war between China and US, exacerbated by national security risks from TikTok, Huawei, and WeChat.[ii]

In the days following the promulgation of the national security law the intended purpose has become clear. China wants to prosecute Hong Kong dissidents for criticizing China even when they are outside of the country. The plan is to silence every protestor. Foreign and non-resident activists cannot step foot in Hong Kong without fear of being incarcerated. The activists in Hong Kong retaliate by using blank signs and spray painting redacted slogans in place of their previous protest material.[14]Democratic political opposition is illegal, as it falls under the subversion category of article 22.[15]The law goes so far as to outlaw receiving foreign help from either countries or institutions in any shape.[16] Section 5 of article 29 says that causing hatred of the PRC by the population with the help of a foreign entity is a punishable offense. This would apply to companies hosting or providing a platform for anti-Chinese material. Companies that refuse to comply with China’s content moderation policies could potentially face legal action. How such cases will be handled is still unknown.

U.S. Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Bill Irks China

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Nov. 28, 2019.--Calling Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fl.) pro-Democracy bill a “nakedly hegemonic act,” Beijing’s reacted to U.S. support for Hong Kong protesters.  Chinese 66-year-old President Xi Jinping won’t take lightly 73-year-old President Donald Trump signing Rubio’s Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, signed into law by Trump Nov. 27, with a little fanfare as possible.  Trump worries that if Xi retaliates, linking Trump’s signature to the China-U.S. trade war, it could derail Wall Street’s optimism, leading the Dow Jones Industrial Average to another record close at 28,164.  If Xi cancels trade war talks, it could trigger a market slide, upending the current upward trend with U.S. equities. Trump’s decision to sign Rubio’s Hong Kong bill comes at a sensitive time with U.S.-China trade negotiations. Xi views the U.S. Congress as meddling in China’s internal affairs.

            Beijing has watched from the sidelines as Hong Kong, once a British Crown Colony until July 1, 1997, reverted back to China after enjoying 100 years of British rule.  Hong Kong residents got used to freedoms and opportunities not afforded to citizens of Mainland China.  It was Mao Zedong’s 1949 Communist Revolution that evicted much of pro-Western capitalism in China, leaving Hong Kong’s British rule to continue the last bastion of pro-Western freedom.  Hong Kong residents are typically Cantonese, a world apart from Mandarins from Mainland China.  Speaking a different language and having strong ties to Great Britain, Hong  Kong residents reject China’s Maoist revolution.  Despite Mao’s closed-door policy, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger opened the door July 9, 1971, meeting with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai against objections from an aging Chairman Mao Zedong.

             Kissinger opened the door for President Richard Nixon to visit China Feb. 21, 1972, eventually opening up trade relations, creating the biggest business opportunity in U.S. history. Of all of Nixon’s foreign policy accomplishments, none is greater than opening up China to U.S. business. Whatever the trade imbalance with China, the U.S. economy—especially consumers—benefit handsomely from the thaw in U.S.-China trade relations.  Realizing that China must compete in the world economy, Zhou helped lift China from a feudal society into a modern middle class, now the second ranked world economic power.  Trump ran his campaign—and presidency—on fixing the trade imbalance with China, costing U.S. manufacturing jobs.  With the trade war going on for over a year, it’s hurt the Gross Domestic Product [GDP] of both countries, something the Rubio’s Hong Kong bill threatens.

            China sees Hong Kong as its own unique problem, managing a growing pro-Democracy movement, throwing a monkey wrench into Hong Kong’s once prosperous economy.  Signing Rubio’s Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act antagonizes Beijing, now grappling with at times violent pro-Democracy protests disrupting the former British Crown colony.  Street protests erupted in June when Hong Kong’s Beijing-backed administrator Carrie Lam considered an extradition bill allowing Hong Kong to extradite lawbreakers to Beijing for prosecution.  Violent protests prompted Lam to withdraw the bill Sept. 4, only to watch the protests continue.  Things hit a fever’s pitch when NBA’s Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey tweeted, “Fight for Freedom, Stand with Hong Kong” Oct. 7.  Given the sensitive trade talks, Trump stayed out of the Hong Kong controversy.

            Signing Rubio’s bill yesterday, Trump stirred a hornet’s nest, hoping to get a peaceful resolution to Hong Kong’s pro-Democracy crisis.  “I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China and the people of Hong Kong,” Trump said in a statement.  “They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all.”  Trump knows that Xi considers Rubio’s bill interference in China’s internal affairs. Xi considers dealing with Hong Kong China’s problems, doesn’t appreciate outside meddling.  Chinese Foreign Ministry said Trump “strengthens the resolve of the Chinese people, including the Hong Kong people, and raise the sinister intentions and hegemonic nature of the U.S.,” sounding more like North Korea than Communist China.

            Stepping into China’s internal affairs, the U.S. Congress throws a monkey wrench into highly sensitive China-U.S. trade talks, trying to end the current trade war that’s harmed both economies.  “The U.S. side ignore facts, turned black to white, and blatantly gave encouragement for violent criminals who smashed and burned, harmed innocent city residents, trampled on the rule of law and endangered social order,” said the Foreign Ministry.  Trump was pressured by Rubio and other members of Congress to show support for Hong Kong’s pro-Democracy protesters.  When Hong Kong was turned back to Mainland China, Beijing accepted “One nation, two systems” for Hong Kong.  Beijing didn’t agree to surrender sovereignty of Hong Kong, something protesters seek.  Beijing isn’t about to back down in setting down pro-Democracy protests in Hong Kong, seeing it a matter of sovereignty, not human rights.

How the heck did the refs in Warriors-Rockets miss this call?

Luckily, James Harden’s game-winner rendered it meaningless, but now did the refs blow this so badly?

Yes, the Warriors and Rockets played what may have been the best game of the season on Thursday night. And yes, that game ended with James Harden drilling a ridiculous, double-contested 29-foot bomb to lift Houston — short its other All-Star point guard — to a one-point overtime win over Golden State.

But we cannot forget how poor officiating just before that Harden game-winner nearly cost Houston a chance at winning this game in the first place. This was the worst missed call many fans have seen in a very long time.

The sanctity of the game of basketball deserves better than what we saw on Thursday night.

Kevin Durant didn’t have just one foot out of bounds when he saved the ball before it made its way into Stephen Curry’s hands. He took three steps out of bounds along the baseline before knocking the ball back in. Klay Thompson recovered the 50/50 ball and threw it to Curry, who took a step in and knocked down an open mid-range jump shot to give the Warriors a 134-132 lead with 23.1 seconds left in overtime.

Nobody could believe it at the time, especially not the Rockets:

Had Curry’s shot served as the game-winner, this missed call would have been the story of the morning. Instead, Harden’s heroics are dominating the headlines, and rightfully so. He recorded his fifth straight 40-point game, vaulting himself into the MVP conversation and the Rockets back into the playoff picture along the way. His game-winner was one giant Ball Don’t Lie message.

But we must hold our dear officials to higher standards. And in order to do so, we cannot gloss over their missteps, especially ones so egregious as this.

“I could believe [they missed the call] because the refs were missing a lot tonight,” Durant said after the game. “They miss a lot in general, so you can easily fool them.”

Here’s another angle of the play, including Harden’s disbelief that such an obvious out of bounds call — three steps! — could go uncalled:

We have a few questions:

1. Who messed up?

Tre Maddox, John Goble, and Tony Brown were the three officials on the call, and it appeared Maddox (No. 73) was the one closest to the play. He’s in his eighth season as an NBA referee, according to the NBA referee’s website. Previously, he was a G-League and Pac-12 official.

This was his 417th NBA game. Basketball Reference has a ton of stats on his officiating record over the years.

Ironically, Maddox and Durant have history. Last March, Maddox tossed Durant from a game against the Milwaukee Bucks after Durant shouted “CALL THE F****G FOUL YOU B***H-ASS MOTHERF****R.

2. Why wasn’t this call reversed upon review?

Officials are allowed to go to the replay monitor to review borderline calls in the last two minutes of regulation and overtime, so why didn’t they do so here?

The simple answer is because the Rockets didn’t call timeout after Curry’s made bucket and ultimately hit the go-ahead shot anyway.

The more complicated answer: reviews are only triggered when the officials actually make an out-of-bounds call, and not when they keep a play going that should’ve been blown dead. Via the league’s instant replay guidelines:

Referees can only initiate a review on a called out-of-bounds play (for example, not one where an out-of-bounds might have occurred) and only those involving doubt as to which player caused the ball to go out (not those, for example, where a player stepped on the line).

This obvious missed call failed both of those tests, and since the game continued on after the mistake, the officials couldn’t go back to retroactively dock the Warriors points.

3. What happens to those officials now?

Surely they should get punished for such an obvious failure at their jobs, right? They will, but probably not in ways most will notice.

The most obvious way will be on the league’s Last Two Minute reports, released the day after for any game that was within three points in the last two minutes and overtime. Surely the league will admit that the call was missed, note it, and share it with the public. (You can view archived pages here).

In past years at least, officials have been fined for missed calls, albeit not publicly. Rarely are any public suspensions announced, though it did happen in 2017 when referee Courtney Kirkland bumped heads with Warriors guard Shaun Livingston.

There is also a system of accountability and evaluation for officials used to determine future assignments, as the referees themselves admit:

As we reported in October, the league estimates they get about 92 percent of calls right. They have also revamped and expanded its training systems for future officials to help adjust to the speed of the modern game.

So it’s wrong to say that these three officials won’t face any repercussions for blowing such a crucial call so obviously. The difference is that the accountability may not be as public as it would be for a player or coach.
